Moira: Four episode 84 how to Awaken to your true self with our guest, author, and founder of Cine Somatics. I'm going to be doing that through this. Andrew Daniel. Andrew is an award winning and international bestselling author and director at the center for Cine Somatic Development. His Cine Somatics workshop, Yay, are held internationally from New York to London, Tuscany to Switzerland, helping professionals see the elusive patterns that hold them back. So,, without further ado, it is my pleasure to introduce you to Andrew Daniel. Welcome, Daniel.
Andrew: Thank you so much for having me.
Moira: This is going to be fun. I was debating on having I still might have you on twice because I have so much, I wanted to talk about. I thought, I can't get that into 1 hour or 50 minutes or whatever.
Andrew: It's a big book.
Moira: Yeah, it's a big book, but we're going to dive in, and we'll see where that lands and what we both feel like that. So,, I want to start by at the very beginning of your book, you shared that a major company published. You among the most prominent leaders in your field. It was validating for you. Joyous and a dream come true. You thought you had it made and then three months later you were homeless. What happened with that story? Tell us.
Andrew: Yeah. So, I had my course, Holistic Sex published, and that same company. There was a lot of people that I read earlier in my life, and so it was incredible that after about, let's see, five, six, seven years of studying and applying concepts around spirituality, relationships, sexuality, healing, I created this course called Holistic Sex. And it came from this new paradigm that wasn't just tantra. It wasn't just like, BDSM. It wasn't just vanilla, it wasn't just extreme, it wasn't just sexual, it wasn't just spiritual. It brought the most functional and expressive aspects of all of that together to not only have better relationships and a better sex life, but also to heal, also to transform our view and our paradigm around the intersection between our spiritual life and our sexual life. So, that was incredible that I put that out there and they picked it up and I literally was like, oh my God, I did it. I'm there, my name is there. I'm published. This is amazing. And then about three months later, I was homeless. I wasn't making money. There were certain things that were going on. When you advertise stuff, you can't talk about this topic. And so there was a struggle in being able to promote it and advertise it and various things. So,, I didn't actually get as much money as I expected to get from that. Along with my software company, I was transitioning out of being a programmer and running a software company, and the industry was changing. So,, my income from my software company was at the end, and the income from my new career was not as much as I expected it to be. And so I ended up sleeping in my car and living in my car for off and on for about six months. And then a few years later, it happened again. And I was actually homeless, twice sleeping in my car in the Los Angeles area. And it was very, very confusing because here I was, I learned all of this stuff, I overcame all of these things. I got secrets to the universe. I was teaching, I was published, and yet I still couldn't afford to have a home. Just my bare necessities I wasn't able to get to. So,, it was very confusing that I could have had so much success. I could have had a software company, could have had my publishing deal, and yet I couldn't even function in the world. So,, yeah, it was very interesting time.
Moira: Wow. And twice homeless. That's pretty scary. So,, let's get into this Stucky story, because this would have shaped a story for you being stuck. And you also mentioned how being stuck is actually a story about being stuck. Now, that's kind of a play on words. Tell us about that.
Andrew: Yeah, our stories are the things that we give a narration around what actually happens. Right. So, it's the difference between I'm homeless versus, well, this happened to me because this person and I couldn't do that and so I just can't make it. And I'm unable to do this because this happened, but I tried so hard, and it just never happens, and this keeps happening to me. Why me? Right? That's a story. Well, that's a lot of stories around the data, around the reality of what happened. And so many of us believe the story is the reality. And so, what I put forward in this first chapter of the book is that our stories are not the truth. Our stories are a narration we give about what actually happened. And if we can let go of those, if we can penetrate those and the perhaps trauma and emotion around it, we can get closer to the truth. And the closer we get to what actually happened without our distortions, judgments, filters, triggers, reactivities, the closer to healing and a functional life will get.
Moira: So, perceptions in there too. So, what is the steps that you took for yourself to do that? Because for you, you're homeless in a car and you're looking at the narrative around like it's happening, it's real. But tell me what steps you took because there are people who are right now in this audience who are challenged with in relationships and jobs in their life, with weight, with whatever it is that they're dealing with, which is very real to them. How did they start to step out of that and stop repeating those stories that really don't serve them well?
Andrew: I think that awareness that you just said about these stories that keep happening, I think that's a really big key because the first step is awareness. As you said, you're in the story, it's running you. And so that's just what's happening, right? That's the reality. When the story runs you, that's your reality. And so, the first step is to become aware that, oh, we actually even have things like stories, that there's a difference between just the facts, reporting the details, the data, and the noise, the drama, the narrative around it. So, if you can even get yourself to that place where you can recognize, oh, what is the drama around this? Is this something that keeps happening? Is this something that is serving me or not? And what is it actually serving? Perhaps there's a secondary gain. Perhaps there's a part of me that is getting off on my suffering. Perhaps I'm getting attention or even income, even money support. I'm being taken care of in a certain way because of this story. So, you're really getting honest with yourself about what are you getting from keep telling the story. Because chances are it's not just a one-time thing. You create a narration around it. And if you can start to become aware of what is the story, I keep telling myself? Is it a victim story? Is it a poor me story? Is it a me against the world story? What's the narrative that is running the certain situation? It’s just, oh, I can't ever get out of it. That's not true. That's a story. And so, if you can start to separate the stories, the beliefs, the reactivity from the facts of the situation, that's going to be a really good first step into collapsing the story and getting out of it.
Moira: So, to collapse the story, you have to identify what you just said, like, really look at it honestly, because you say that a lot in the book. You really talk about telling the truth, and it's not about telling the truth to someone else, about telling the truth to yourself. Yes, that's where it begins. And then start to move along that path to reclaim your power. But the first step is to tell the truth and really look at what's the story about, even if, like, victimhood, I'm a victim of this and do and a person might truly believe that. And again, to look at the scenario, what do you say for somebody that's in an abusive relationship, and they are maybe a victim, and they really don't know how to get out of that? Have you had people like that that come through your program?
Andrew: Oh, absolutely. That was me. I wasn't necessarily an abusive relationship, but I was a victim. I mean, I grew up being bullied and teased and parents fighting and not a lot of money. I was homeless, all of these things. And the victim story was probably the biggest thing that ran me. And it took a while, so I'll be upfront. Is that depending on the degree and the gains and the benefits and how entrenched this is in your surroundings, it can take a lot of determination to escape the gravity terminal velocity. You have to be going fast enough to get out of the well, it would be your escape velocity, really, right. As a rocket ship getting off the planet Earth, getting out of the gravitational field of the story. And so, it does take energy. But once you get out, you're free. Right. Once you get out of the gravitational field of Earth, it requires truly little energy to move around in space. But when you're getting out of that, it does require determination. It requires willpower. It requires choice after choice. It requires making that the most important thing in your life. So, if you're not willing to do that, it's probably not going to happen anytime soon. So, that dedication to the truth. And I say this at the end of the book, because it's one of the most important things. Make truth the most important thing. Make this empowerment piece. Make letting go of this poor me victim mentality the most important thing. Make your safety important in, let's say, an abusive relationship, your sanity important. And I say that because oftentimes we don't do that. We may think we do, but perhaps we're making appeasing the other person important. Perhaps we're making our job more important, our career more important. Perhaps we're making our parents approval more important. So, when you can shift the energy to, this is running my life. Let's say I'm an abusive relationship, well, you can keep blaming them. And it may be true. Obviously, if someone is abusing you, it is them choosing to abuse you. And so, they have a tremendous responsibility in that, right? They're making the choice to do harm to you. And so, your job to start off with is going to be start looking for the places you give your power away. Right. It doesn't mean that you blame yourself. It doesn't mean that they're off the hook. But if you want out of it, that's the most important thing. You have to determine if you want out of that situation truly or not, because not everybody does. A lot of people are just repeating the same cycles over and over and over again. They want to feel sorry for themselves. They want these other secondary gains, and they don't always realize it. So, that's why it's really important to realize that first thing we talked about, what's the story? What are you getting from this? And so, once you can establish that, start bit by bit, reclaiming, even if it's minute and minuscule every little thing, where you give your power away, where you are making the choices. And as you do that, you slowly start to take back all of the places you've given your power away. You become empowered again. And that's what takes somebody out of the victim story, is when you realize that the power is yours.
Moira: Thank you. Do you think people are scared of because you talk about accountability, responsibility, and stewardship. That's too much. That I just put in that one question but a responsibility and then accountability, but responsibility to make that choice. And do you think people are scared to take that responsibility on because it's like too much? Or they might feel, again a story that they're going to fail, or they can't do it? Or again, your exercises in your programs, again, you'll take people through your steps so they can start to do this. Even that minuscule that you talked about, just something do you have an example of somebody that just something like that, like they came at the beginning, started your program, did this work, and we're going to drop into an exercise in a minute. And they started to go into that present moment. And again, you talk in the present moment that the now is truly the end of suffering. And the still point is the choice, which I call choice point. Again, that was a lot I said, I'm so intrigued by your work, Andrew. So, help me. Help me because I'm looking at it first is determination. Make the decision, the choice that you want something different, but you have to recognize it still also. So, like you said, the awareness. You have to have the awareness, which you referred to.
Andrew: Yeah, there's a place in my book where I actually go through that process.
Moira: And I love the one we're going to do, the amnesia exercise. I thought that was brilliant when I read you have many great exercises, but that was one that we thought we might do today.
Andrew: Yeah, excellent. Let me see. It's a big book for me, too. So, let me find unless, you know, I think it's the A Five Process in Dragons and Their Treasures.
Moira: It is.
Andrew: There's also how to stop.
Moira: Yes, that's another one.
Andrew: We could list those two, and they're very complementary. They're a little different, but they're complementary. So, in the chapter Dragons and the Treasures, that's about shadow work.
Moira: Share what that is. Some people won't know what that is.
Andrew: Yeah. So, shadow work, it's been a little trendy. Now, if you search Amazon or the Internet, you'll see all this shadow work stuff, and it's a good start for some people, but most things that are generic and put out for a mass audience, it's a bit watered down. So, my approach to shadow work is actually really going into the shadow. It's the parts of ourselves that we've discarded, that we've judged, that we think are bad, wrong, evil, unlovable. And the ego says, do not look at that. Do not acknowledge it. Do not go there. Do not let that be a part of you. Do not let other people know that at all costs. It's the part of ourselves that we want to cut off, that we want to get rid of, that we want to shove away, that we never want to see, that we wish weren't true about ourselves. So, this is the shadow, and oftentimes it's unconscious, and it's unconscious for a reason because we don't want to look at it. So, it gets shoved down into the basement. Yeah. So, shadow work is a process of going into that and to reclaiming that, facing it, and integrating it. And by definition, it's not fun. It's not light, it's not love light, rainbows, unicorns, and glitter. It is dark. It is the most vile, awful parts of ourselves, or as you find out, actually, some of the best parts of ourselves that we've distorted to be those things. Not all of it, but oftentimes some of it. And so shadow work, in my definition, is that process of actually facing these things, of facing our dragons and reclaiming the treasure that they protect. That's essentially shadow work. And for most people, it's not fun, it's not enjoyable. It is extremely challenging because you are invited, you are required to actually go there. And so a lot of people just want to talk about it. They want to maybe do some shadow work, coloring books or something, and that's fine, but it really doesn't get you through. You actually have to face these things. And so what we're about to share right now is a process. I just basically call it the A Five process, because everything there's five steps, and they all start with A, yeah, that's good. And so, again, it is not it’s not some strategy you just go through every time like a technique. It's more of a framework, right? It's just more of a process framework to understand, to conceptualize what it actually is rather than just, okay, so here's my shadow. Now what this guide you through what you actually have to do to get there. And so, the process is really anything that when you come across some shadow aspect, whether it's a feeling, behavior, a thought, a story, when you're faced with something that isn't just, oh, here's a story, okay, great. But when it's actually like, okay, I'm being violated, I'm being abused, I'm abandoning myself, I'm betraying myself. I cannot get where I want to get in life. I'm alone and lonely forever. Whatever it is. These real-life defining stories that are filled with a lot of pain and suffering. This is how you move through it. One, awareness. Two, acknowledgment. Three, allowance. Four, annihilation. Five, access. And so basically, this is a few pages in the book, but I'll just go through it quickly so you can get the concept awareness. You have to be aware of what's happening. And this is what we talked about in the beginning of the episode. You have to know what's going on. If you're checked out on your phone, if you're just scrolling through Instagram for hours a day watching 8 hours of Netflix if you're using recreational pharmaceutical drugs to dissociate to numb yourself, if you are doing any sort of thing that preoccupies you from the present moment and what's happening. You're probably not going to be aware that these things are even running. You. This is what mindfulness leads to. So, mindfulness is like the training wheels to get to this place. You actually have to be mindful of what you're feeling. And so that's awareness. The next is acknowledgment. You actually have to face it. You have to look at it. You can't avoid it, you can be aware of it, right? Oh, I have this thing that's happening. I'm playing this victim role. But yeah, it's not a big deal. Let's just look at what's on TV today. So, you actually have to acknowledge it. You actually have to face it. You don't deny it. You don't discredit it. You go inside and you actually look at it and let it come to you as well. So, the third step is allowance. You have to allow it to be whatever it is. So, oftentimes people will go, and they'll find the shadow, say, all right, well, here's this awful feeling. I had a client yesterday and they were talking about beauty, and they didn't want to express themselves because if they started crying, they'd just be an ugly mess for me on video. And so that was a really big breakthrough because they were suppressing their emotion, which would move them forward, right, that would help them get closer to their true self because they didn't want to feel or be seen as ugly. And so that's a shadow aspect. This step allowance tells us that we have to let ourselves feel that. We have to let ourselves go and feel that ugliness. It doesn't mean that we are accepting that as the ultimate truth. What we're doing is stopping the resistance, we're stopping the suppression, we're stopping the shoving it down and we're actually letting it run its course to feel that without judgment, without giving it meaning, without telling more stories, we're just reporting the data, we're just feeling whatever's there without trying to change it or alter it. And that's one of the hardest steps because so much of self help and personal development is so we can not have to feel those bad things ever again. Even a lot of healing. This work is different because we actually have to go into the thing in order to heal it. So, that's the phrase, you have to feel it to heal it. And any modality or approach that says you can process and get rid of all of this pain and suffering and trauma or anything without having to feel bad at all ever again is full of ****. It's just not true. It's not real. You can certainly alleviate a lot of pain and suffering without having to do shadow work or do intense work like this. However, the core root of this stuff, the core story, the core shadow can only be resolved if you actually face it and feel it and get into relationship with it because it's going to teach you something and that's going to be the last step. But the fourth step, the next step is annihilation. And annihilation is akin to ego death. This is where we let that feeling annihilate us. And what that means is oftentimes these really, really dark feelings feel like death, right? If I go into that place where I was abandoned as a five-year-old, if I go back to that place where I didn't trust myself and I betrayed myself, if I go back to that place where I felt humiliated, all of these kind of things, if they feel like death, they're terrible. We construct our whole life to not ever have to feel those things again. The thing is, it's that avoidance of that feeling of annihilation that keeps it alive. That's what keeps it there. And it's our ego that's trying to keep us safe and prevent us from going there. But once we do that, that's the last step that collapses the story because we're no longer fighting it, we're surrendering. And this is the same experience. People on psychedelics go through a psychedelic ego death where they have to make a choice between holding on and clinging to their everyday mind and experience versus surrendering to that feeling of oneness. So, it's the same thing, except we're doing it consciously here. We're doing it without psychedelics or altered states and that allows us to be associated to the wisdom and that takes us to the last step. Access. Once you penetrate this. Once you go through all of this and you surrender to it, you move through it. There's always a release. Doesn't have to be a lot of crying or anything like this but there is a physical, emotional shift. As a practitioner, I can see it. I can feel it every single time. And without that shift, at some level we know that balloon hasn't popped. You have to go 100%. Imagine a balloon and a needle. If you just put that needle in 99%, you can pull it out and the balloon is still okay. You have to go 100% to pop that pop is equivalent to annihilation. And so the last step is access. This is where you actually get all of the riches. You defeated the dragon, you slayed the dragon, and you have the treasure. Access is the insight, the wisdom, the reclamation of the power you've given away. You realize, oh, my God, I gave my power away in order to have this false sense of safety or to not take responsibility. Oh, well, now I have that power back. Now I can make the choice. Maybe it's reclaiming a sense of self love. Speak. Oh, my gosh. I am Lovable. And you get back in touch with that, whatever it is. This last bit is where you have the reclamation. You become more whole. And so that is essentially the process of healing through shadow work. And that is a similar thing. If you just penetrate a story where you move through that, you become aware of it, you face it, feel it, all of that kind of stuff. That's just a bit more of the intense way of going through that.
Moira: Thank you. A question there is when somebody works on one aspect that they're working on then they have other aspects they want to work on too. It could be all the different physically, emotionally, spiritually, financially, whatever it is. But we have many areas to work on in their life. Once they do this work, does whatever was showing up before, is it gone for them because they've done the work. They've gone right down to that fifth step of access and definitely the death part and surrendering. Does that issue come up ever for those people again or it's gone?
Andrew: That particular thing is done. It's not necessarily gone. You've integrated it. You're in relationship with it. So, it's about, let's say the problem has gone, the pain has gone. However, as you said, we have a lot of aspects. And so there can be I would call them like complexes. And what I just mean by that is that not like, let's just say someone's not making enough money. Well, that's not one problem. That's probably hundreds of things, right? Limiting beliefs, judgments, fears, relationship with scarcity and abundance. And then there's also functionality stuff of just well, you could have no trauma but just never been taught how to produce value, to make money. And so one of the things that makes this work different is that it's not just healing. We're actually helping people become more functional, which means making more money, having better intimacy, having more functional relationships. So, yes, once you actually penetrate something, that specific thing has shifted. However, what often happens when you start the work is that you find out that there's another layer, there's something else. And so you see, okay, well, I've abandoned myself by letting somebody else take that promotion because I didn't feel like I was enough. Okay, well, you get to see how you've abandoned yourself, and perhaps you did that when you were in fourth grade in some school project. Okay, great. Well, that's resolved. Well, maybe now that reveals how your narcissistic parents made you entertain them unknowingly. And so your whole life you've been abandoning yourself for the love and approval of others, right? Then you penetrate that, and then there's lots of components. The process reveals a lot more things, and there is an end, because that's the thing people realize. They're like, oh, my gosh, I'm opening up a can of worms. I've been doing this for 20 years, and I'm still not there. Well, in this work, there's not really anywhere to get, but you do eventually, if that's your goal, stop suffering. There is an end to suffering. You do arrive to peace, and that's a choice. But you can't get there if you have a backlog of 60 years of shadow material suppressed and hidden.
Moira: I know when people come to see me, when I was coaching a lot more before with belief work, which was way before core belief work, before people were doing it, when I started that and what people came to, what they asked for wasn't usually what they really wanted. It was like that onion, right? A lot deeper underneath. I love what you said here. You cannot find joy by seeking happiness. Seeking happiness leads to and is based upon suffering. When we fight the universe, it fights us. When we yield to the universe, it yields to us. How does somebody like, we've talked about this with this process, how does somebody begin to trust and surrender that fourth part that we talked about to the universe? And how do you see the universe? I know you talk about the yeah. How do you see the universe and divinity? And again, a big question, Andrew, this.
Andrew: Is like hours of answers.
Moira: I know. That's why we might have you back. Because I'm a little chunker, so you get all these little chunks. I don't just ask one question like, do this. I'm like, oh, do this with color and movement and DA DA DA DA.
Andrew: Sure. Yeah. Well, let's just start with how someone can start finding that trust again. So,, as you mentioned earlier, and you pronounced correctly, Cinesomatics, after some practice, is that we use movement to help people through their transformation process, and we do it different. Then anything else. It's very cutting-edge technology that really could only be done in the past decade or so with the invention and access of video equipment. So, what we do is, instead of talking about our problems for weeks, months, years, or perhaps decades, which is fallible to the conscious mind of the client. It's fallible to the manipulations of the client, the egoic defenses of the client. What we do instead is get people moving in their body. And so the body is a home to all of these psychological, emotional, energetic stuff that's happening, right? It's our vehicle, it's our vessel. And so it houses all of that stuff. The body gives a readout of all of the stuff that's going on inside. And this comes back to the principle of as above, so below. And so as above, right? The thing that's going on in the mind, the consciousness, is as below. It shows up in the body. And so what we do is we film participants moving. We use high end cinematography equipment and record people doing pretty much any kind of movement. Now we have a set of certain diagnostics, certain set of movement that we go to. But how you do one thing is how you do everything. And so the way somebody moves in their body is how they move through their life. And by having people move in their body and playing it back to them and showing them how they're moving in their body, they get to see all of the subconscious stories, beliefs, worldviews behaviors on video in their own body for themselves. So, we have people go through a process where they're moving, and we film it. Then we sit down, we play that video back, and then I give them feedback about all of the unconscious, energetic patterns, beliefs, whatever it is that's happening. And then they get to see it for themselves in their own body. So, it's practical, it's applicable, it's tangible. All of the evidence you need to see is right before your eyes. So, it does not require believing in any sort of anything. You don't have to believe in anything. You don't also need 50 studies to prove that it works or not. It's right there in front of you. It's tangible. And so, this process helps bypass years and decades where a traditional talk therapy might take. And so it's a very accelerated process, which means it's also very confronting because this shadow material reveals itself through the cinematic process. So, that's my approach. And so, I will answer the question that you asked of how someone does this through the approach that I use to get myself out of all this stuff and to help my clients. So, understanding, knowing that this is the approach that we take. What we do is we help the person through movement in their body find that sense of safety and trust. And so some things we do is we have them walk around the space. I'll have participants just walk around the space and then we review the footage in how they're relating to the space. So, I've had people that walk through the space like it's a minefield. I've had people walk through the space like everything is out to get them. I've had people walk through the space where it's like they're walking on eggshells. I've had people walk through the space where they're timid, small, and shut down and hiding from the furniture. These are examples of people who are relating to the space in a way that they don't feel safe, that they don't trust the space. And every single time I give them feedback and show them every single time, there's not a single person, not a single client that doesn't say yes, that doesn't say, that's exactly how it feels. And so the feedback rate, the accuracy rate of this process is close to 100. One hundred is a bold statement, but I have yet to find an example of someone who, by seeing themselves in video and receiving the feedback, didn't say, yeah, well, that's what it feels like. The times that they don't there tends to be other stories, right? They're defensive. They're running some sort of manipulation. There's other agendas that can distort that. But when you see it for yourself, when you see yourself cowering as you walk through your own living room, something isn't working right. That's not a functional way to move through life, because remember, how you do one thing is how you do everything. How you move through the space is how you move through your life. And so for those people, what we do is we have them start showing up in the space differently. So, we say, all right, are you now aware how you're moving through the space like it's a minefield?
Moira: Yes.
Andrew: Okay, great. Well, now I want you to try this again and purposefully go through the space like it's a minefield. And so that gets them in relationship with the shadow material. They start owning it, right? All right, so move to the space like you're terrified that the boogeyman's going to get you. Okay, great. They reclaim they reassociate to that shadow material, and oftentimes that's enough to bring up the story underlining it. Oh, my gosh. This makes me think about the time I was two years old and was left in my crib all alone in the dark. Okay? And so then we help them move through that experience. And then as they do that, they actually shift in their body. So, they're moving through the space. They're having this healing, they're facing this stuff. And then after they come through it, they actually literally intangibly physically in their body, are moving through the space in a completely different way. And then that new way they get to see is more functional, more trusting, feels more safe than the old way, and then they go on with that. They practice that more, they embody it more. So, that becomes their new step point. That new way of relating to the space is their new default, rather than, let's say, that minefield. And so this is essentially an aspect of how cinematics can very quickly, in minutes or in an hour, completely transform the way someone relates to their life.
Moira: It's powerful. I know you also mentioned what is truth behind the space and how do you discover what happens when you start seeing how you can be serving the space instead of how the space can serve you? See, you do this thing with words that I love. Like, I read that and I'm like, wow, I just love that. And at the end of the book, you talked about, well, we're not going to get into that today. We'll have to have you back about how important vision and visioning, our life, and our mission, how we go about our life every day. Because in this sense, one thing you said about the space, you talked about your book and how you made a decision around that, but it was like, now let me get it perfectly how you said that. It was like how the book wanted to unfold more than how you wanted to unfold. It was how you did that again with those words. And I went, that is just magnificent. That's just brilliant. This is so wonderful. And as I said, I know that we're going over time and let's have you back, Andrew, in the new year in 2024 and continue this and share this with people because it's powerful work and you're serving a large community to help people live their best life.
